COMMUNITY

North Salem. a rural community of 6,000 residents, is dotted with picturesque lakes. twisting country lanes, and sprawling horse farms. Close to major highways and rail traffic, the community offers its inhabitants the best of both worlds -the employment and the culture of metropolitan New York and the security and the quiet of a rural setting.

The Hammond Museum, with its extensive art collection and its varied concert programs, helps to meet the cultural needs of the townspeople while their recre- ational requirements are fulfilled by an excellent public library, a well-maintained park, and an active town recreation program.

SCHOOL DISTRICT

The North Salem School District includes Pequenakonck Elementary School, the North Salem Middle School. and a comprehensive 9-12 High School. The district's commitment to small class sizes encourages the use of a variety of teaching techniques across grade levels and the disciplines. An active PTO provides an exceptional after-school activity program for all students in grades kindergarten through five.

Middle School students enjoy a solid curriculum complemented by both honors and gifted opportunities as well as a variety of exploratory courses, trips to Washington and Boston and co-curricular and intramural activities. The High School offers eight advanced placement courses. an honors track. numerous programs in the studio and the performing arts. and a host of intramural and interscholastic sports. Over 96% of the Class of 2000 went on to higher education.

Without question. the strength of the district lies within its people -the enthusiasm of its students. the dedication of its staff, and the support of its parents, Board of Education, and community. '.
