This preserve is the pioneer land project of the Nature Conservancy, which is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia. The Conservancy owns more than 1 ,600 preserves, the largest private system of nature sanctuaries in the world. By 1999 the Mianus River Preserve had grown from its original 60-acre purchase in 1955 to 719 acres. Its mission is to preserve the watershed of the Mianus River Gorge as a wilderness area and setting for educational and scientific activities. The preservation work and acquisitions are carried out entirely by private subscription. Your financial help, through the annual appeal, or work as a volunteer is encouraged and most appreciated. One can work on the Stewardship Committee (trail work), Development or Fund Raising and others. The Mianus Gorge organization is also interested in watershed protection in Bedford, Pound Ridge and North Castle.
